A RSS file format is part of the family of XML formats that
are used for syndication. This file format is used by many
websites to distribute their content. This can be the
headlines or the full content. A podcast is another version
of a RSS feed.
The RSS file format uses items with descriptions and a link
to describe the contents of a web page. There are also
standard header and footer tags for a RSS feed. This file
format is invisible to the user as they only see the actual
content page.
The RSS feed is mainly used by websites that frequently
change their content like news sites and weblogs. This is
also a major part of the podcasting method for content
distribution. Users use RSS aggregators or newsreaders to
subscribe to a RSS feed. This allows the user to read the
content from the news site or weblog without actually
visiting the web site. Some feed readers actually give you
access to all the RSS feeds from one source and allow you
to subscribe to individual feeds that you are interested
in.
After creation of the RSS feed you save it as a xml file on
your web server. You also need to validate your feed. It is
possible for you to use the free Feed Validator service on
the web. You can also use a professional feed creator like
Feed Editor which will automate the entire process for you.
